Technology Makes the Heart Grow Fonder? A Test of Media Multiplexity Theory for Family Closeness

Technology can be helpful for family relationships. Media multiplexity theory illustrates that the more technological connections (i.e., multimodality) an individual has with their members, stronger relationship. Yet, this assumes spending time face to (FtF) is equitable multimodality relationship quality. The goal of study examine impact online and offline interactions quality Data are from undergraduate students completing survey (N = 154). Results reveal FtF better relationships one parent, but not other. Although was significantly different grandparent sibling relationships, participants felt closer siblings when they texted. Correlational analyses revealed individuals scoring high in collectivism report associated higher closeness love, particularly parents, other members. These results provide some evidence importance those who identify as collectivistic.
